LESSON OBJECTIVE: Students will organize information concerning the conflict in Darfur into a PowerPoint presentation and utilize that information to write a letter of advocacy to their elected congressman in order to provide the opportunity for service learning hours.

Create a PowerPoint to reflect the following guided questions.

      1.  What caused the start of the conflict in Darfur?

2.      What is the current situation in Darfur?

3.      What needs to be done to bring an end to the conflict and human suffering?

4.      What could I do to help the people of Darfur?

PowerPoint Presentation

A few students will be making a presentation of their PowerPoint.

Letter writing assignment  (3 service learning hours)

·        Write a letter to your congressman. 

·        Tell him that you are a 10th grade World History student at Milford Mill Academy studying about the crisis in Darfur.

·        Describe the situation as best that you can.

·        Make a few recommendations.

·        Remind him that he is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and that he should be making this a priority.

·        Use spelling and grammar check.

·        Refer to rubric.
