Instrumental Music-Strings
Orchestra Director/Violinist
Instrumental Music-Strings Magnet Instructor

Holsey Kevin Gillis is a graduate of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania earning B.F.A. degrees in both Jazz Violin Performance and Music Education. Throughout his college career, he studied with Robert DePasquale of the Philadelphia Orchestra and international jazz composer/recording artist John Blake. Mr. Gillis also holds a Masters of Science degree in Administration from McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland.

Mr. Gillis' musical experience started at a very young age. He began singing in the children's church choir at the age of five, then began playing the violin in the Philadelphia School District in the fourth grade. He received a scholarship to attend the Jenkintown School of Music the following year. After auditioning, he was accepted into the All-Philadelphia Boys Choir, touring Europe at the age of twelve. This tour led him to places such as Moscow, Leningrad, Poland, Helsinki, Copenhagen and Stockholm.

Before coming to the Baltimore area, Mr. Gillis taught elementary and middle school orchestra techniques throughout Philadelphia. He went on to teach music history and music theory, as well as String and Full Orchestra for the Overbrook High School Magnet Program. He also co-directed the Philadelphia String Ensemble Orchestra with directors Kathy Thomas and Tanya Murphy.

Upon Mr. Gillis' 1996 arrival in the Baltimore area as a String specialist, he immediately became interested in Honors Orchestra Programs and began assisting conductors. He eventually became an Honors Orchestra String Conductor, clinician and area music assessments adjudicator.

Mr. Gillis’ school orchestras have consistently received Superior and Excellent adjudication remarks on the county and state levels. Over his many years of instruction, Mr. Gillis' students have received scholarships to performing arts high schools and have further pursued musical careers.

Mr. Gillis is currently, not only the instructor of the Milford Mill Academy Instrumental Music-Strings magnet program, but also a violinist in the Prince Georges Philharmonic Orchestra and the Program Director of the Ann Gentry Educational Outreach Program, which is funded by the Prince Georges Philharmonic Orchestra Association and provides full scholarships towards weekly private professional string instruction.
