INSTRUMENTAL REQUIREMENTS (HIGH
SCHOOL)
Students auditioning into the MMA Band Magnet must
meet the following requirements in order to be considered for entry.
GENERAL
PROCEDURES
- Students should arrive early to
warm-up.
- The
prepared selections should not be more than 4 minutes in total.
- Percussionists
should provide their own sticks and mallets. The school will provide a
snare drum, xylophone, timpani, and drum set for the jazz audition.
- All
brass, woodwind and string players must provide their own instruments for
the audition.
- Any
necessary amplifiers for guitarists are to be provided by the student. The school will not provide an amplifier.
- A piano will be provided for the piano auditions.
PERFORMANCE
REQUIREMENTS -
Brass and Woodwinds
- Chromatic Scale, 2 Octaves where
possible, sixteenth notes.
- Major
Scales- Any 4 up to 5 flats or sharps will be selected (C, F,
Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, G, D, A, E, B).
- 2
Prepared selections or excerpts of solos of contrasting styles that best
demonstrate the student's technical ability and musicianship.
Selections may include the All-State requirements, a solo from the
FBA or FVA list or an etude from a technical studies book (Arban's, Klose,
etc...)
PERCUSSION REQUIREMENTS (HIGH SCHOOL)
Students
auditioning into the MMA Band Magnet Percussion Department must meet the
following requirements in order to be considered for entry.
Concert Percussion Emphasis
Students should
arrive at the audition to perform in the areas of snare drum and keyboard
percussion (i.e. xylophone, marimba). Timpani and drum-set are optional but
recommended.
· Solos
(snare drum/mallets/timpani): the required MMEA All-State selections are preferable, however, any solo
illustrating the student’s ability level is appropriate.
Drum-set Emphasis
Students
auditioning on drum-set should arrive at the audition prepared to play the
following styles:
· Pop/R&B
· Swing
(Jazz)
· Bossa
nova (optional)
